Pyes Pa pack rapists sentenced

Five Tauranga men found guilty of pack raping a woman at Pyes Pa last year have been sentenced to 11-13 years' jail.

Samuel Owen Weenink, 20, Corey Clinton Owens, 20, and Dylan John O'Neill, 21, are sentenced to 12 years and nine months' jail while co-offender Richard James Cameron Morton, 21, received a sentence of 11 years four months' jail.

Five men found guilty of pack raping a woman in Pyes Pa last year have been sentenced.

Justice Raynor Asher gave a fifth offender Paul McMaster, 21, 13 years as he hit the woman when she bit him.

A rape charge against Morton was withdrawn on evidence he did not have full sex with the woman, and instead forced her to perform another sexual act. He was found guilty of being a party to the rape.

The group were earlier found guilty on the charges following a high court jury trial in October.

The sentences were less than the maximum 16-17 year sentence sought by Crown Solicitor Greg Hollister Jones who argued text references among the convicted earlier in the day to ‘putting a woman on the block', was evidence of pre-meditation.

Justice Asher rejected the argument.

"I am unsatisfied when you were talking about 'on the block' you were talking about deliberately raping her," says the Judge.

In sentencing the judge said the decision by the five to force themselves on the woman was more spontaneous than premeditated.

The Judge says the five did terrible harm to their victim, whom they had invited around for a night of drinking and socialising. When she returned from having a cigarette, she was grabbed, stripped and raped.

The woman suffered multiple bruises on the chest, arms and legs and mouth. She had to take nine months off work to recover and had been forced to leave Tauranga because she felt ostracised by her community, says her victim impact statement.

An unsatisfied judge as to the meaning of 'on the block' and premeditation eh? What planet do these precious souls live on anyway because I think the rest of us can work it out.

Still Not Enough !!

Why am I the first person to make comment on this heinous and despicable crime??? Doesn't anyone care anymore that a woman life has been brutalised and torn apart by these filthy scum. They are no less than a paedophile or murderer. Although the latter would be easy to change if it were my family. What about yours??? Plus again, we have judge "NoDread" presiding. Tell me who doesn't think that a minimum of 20years fits the crime!!

Sick

These so called good kids from decent families behave worse than dirty animals. 12 years isn't long enough, the young woman's Hell will last a lot longer. Theirs should too. The judge seems ignorant of common rape lingo, on the block means exactly what they did, it always has. How is it possible that a judge doesn't know this?

Scum of this earth

SENTENCES ABOUT RIGHT(but parole term must be set at 10years) for these lowlife but the lawyers excuses given for animal like behavior and the Judge's reasoning on the question of premeditation defies belief.Any reparation or victim compensation ordered.? . Didn't notice any expressions of remorse other than feeling sorry for themselves. While inside I hope they become acquainted with the small circle and big circle joke.

We bet your parents are proud of you guys - NOT!!! We are with you Mindrifter. If only they had to serve their full sentence and not have it shortened for any reason. Hopefully they will get treated like s... in prison although nothing that can happen to them can make up for what they have done. Thoughts to the lady involved - hold your head up high, know there are people who care and get all the help you need to enable you to get on with the rest of your life. No decent woman will ever want one of these scum bags as a partner/husband - or heaven forbid the father of their children.!!

What is wrong with that judge?????? Everybody with half a brain knows what "on the block" means!!! Those guys didn't just do "terrible harm to their victim", they did irreparable harm to that poor women. I hope these guys get "put on the block" where they're going, so they can know how it feels.
