Road reopens after large Whakamarama fire

UPDATE 12.43pm: Esdaile Road is now reopen after a shelter belt fire closed the road earlier this morning, according to a SunLive reader.

"The road is now open," says the reader.

EARLIER 11.26am: Emergency services are attending a shelter belt fire in Whakamarama. A tractor near the shelter belt is also alight.

Fire fighters are at the scene on Esdaie Road.

"We have two fire appliances from Omokoroa and Katikati and a support vehicle from Greerton in attendance," says Fire Emergency NZ Northern Shift Manager Lauren Sika.

"A 70 metre shelter belt is on fire moving from one end to the other. A tractor is also on fire."

A SunLive reader at the scene says the tractor was mowing prior to the fire starting.

"Not sure what happened. Fire brigade [is] on site, no injuries.

"Road is now closed."
