A confidential council meeting to settle contract details for Tauranga City Council's interim CEO Leigh Auton today has been postponed due to a technical error on the meeting agenda.
Tauranga City Council interim CEO Leigh Auton.
Mayor and councillors were due to meet to discuss the details of the contract in an extraordinary meeting today.
This meeting is postponed after the cover of the agenda paper carried the wrong meeting authorisation.
Council communications advisor Elizabeth Hughes says even though an amendment was made and a new cover page printed, it was not received by the Mayor and Councillors within the requisite 24 hours, says
While the hiccup is minor it is critical that a valid meeting is held. A new day/time will be announced later today.
Leigh Auton started work at the council on July 30 following the death of former CEO Ken Paterson on June 17. He's been hired to take up the restructuring work.
Leigh is being hired on a fixed term contract and during his contract he will act as the chief executive while Christine Jones reverts to deputy chief executive.
Until the council agrees to Leigh's terms of employment, Christine Jones remains technically the acting chief executive.
The confidential meeting is also to discuss Leigh's employment agreement including the salary package.

I have heard alot of inane things, but this wins the "Gold". Bureaucratic gymnastics, a new sport for the Rio olympics, these clowns will go close to gold.
Isn't this the wrong way around?

I'd have thought that any well run organisation would finalise and sign off an employment contract then the person would commence work. From the story it appears Mr Auton has already started but the contract is still being finalised??? Doesn't make sense to me. I'd like to know how much more expensive this will be than simply having kept the existing Acting CEO on for 6 months.
following a death

surely following the death of a council member there must have been a chain of command and someone else should have been in the position to carry on prior to the appointment of a replacement. what is the rest of the committee doing?
Yes, why not just keep the acting CEO?

Hapukafin raises a valid point about a chain of command. It seems that the deputy was a woman. So rather than keep her as acting CEO it seems these councillors have chose to appoint yet another "temporary" person to the role. We'd like to know the costs, if a councillor could please explain through this forum? Maybe money's no object for our city clouncillors?
