UPDATE 5pm: Fire crews have extinguished a "well-involved" car fire on the Lower Kaimai Ranges.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Kaisey Cook says they were called to the fire just after 4pm.

The fire, which was well-involved on arrival, has been extinguished and left with police.

A police spokeswoman says SH29 was closed for some time while emergency services cleared the scene.

The car has now been removed and traffic is flowing.

She says no one was injured in the blaze.

The fire is near the summit, they say.

Waka Kotahi NZ transport agency is advising the car fire is on the western side of the Kaimai Range and stop / go traffic management is in place.

'Motorists are advised to expect delays or delay their journey.”
