Phil hosts Ferrari fundraiser

Thousands of people turned out to admire a sea of red Ferraris worth up to $25million at a charity event hosted by ACDC drummer Phil Rudd at the weekend.

The gold coin donation display raising money for the Look Good Feel Great charity aiding woman with cancer featured a total of 48 Ferraris including two new editions just arrived in New Zealand – the FF and the Californian.

Event organiser Daniel Rogers-Purdie says about 8000 people visited the show on Sunday where Phil's own 599 and F40 Ferrari were on display.

'It was amazing, the whole day was a success.”

Although the final figures are expected by the end of the day, Daniel estimates to have raised about $6000 from the event.

Volunteer Lisa Brooky says it was an 'awesome event”, collecting $800 in her collection bucket alone.

She says one of the highlights was when Phil arrived in his own personal helicopter about 1pm.

'It was really well done. With Phil arriving in his helicopter, it had a big impact on the crowd,” says Lisa.

Knowing Phil is passionate about Ferraris, Daniel decided to approach him about holding an event to raise money for the Look Good Feel Better charity.

'I got in touch with Phil and also with Ferrari New Zealand.

'They said they would love to do something. Continental Car Service in Auckland also sent down two of the latest Ferraris.”

Daniel says Continental shipped two Ferraris – the FF worth about $700,000 and the Californian, worth about $500,000 - to Tauranga from Auckland to avoid putting kms on the speedometer of the brand new vehicles.

All of the money raised from the event will go to Look Good Feel Better, which offers free health and beauty workshops for woman with cancer in Tauranga.

Lisa, a trained beauty therapist, says the workshops offer woman advice about how to use the right skincare and makeup to enhance their appearance while they undergo treatment.

'They go home with between $300 - $400 worth of makeup, including foundations and things.”

Workshops are held every five weeks in Tauranga.

When I first met Phil and sort of got to know him he mentioned to me that one of the reasons he chose to live in Tauranga was because he could walk down the street and no one knew who he was and he could raise his kids in relative anonymity. Well the kids have pretty much grown up and Phil's come out of his shell. Good on ya dude and you people out there, just watch this man. He's a gift to our community and I would suggest, to quote a BTO song. "You ain't seen nothing yet!"
