Death sentence for pitbull

The pitbull dog responsible for an attack on a 13-year-old girl in Te Puke is to be destroyed on Friday.

The Te Puke High School student was bitten on the top of her arm by the pitbull belonging to her neighbour on Tuesday evening.

The girl was taken to Tauranga Hospital where she was treated and discharged.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council animal services team leader Bruce Wills says the dog was collected from the owner on Wednesday and is set to be destroyed.

'It would be irresponsible for them to re-home a dog that has bitten a child.”

He says owners of breeds that are considered dangerous need to keep them under control at all times.

'Particularly dogs that are pitbulls or other menacing breeds, they actually need to be muzzled when they are out in public.

'That is a legislative requirement - it's not just a recommendation but a requirement under law.”

The young girl is now recovering at home.

Justice...

About time this country grew some balls and took some action against dogs that have latched onto children and the innocent.... I will have no hesitation in taking the law into my own hands and disposing of any breed of dog that attacks me or my immediate family. I am sick to death of reading about the number of attacks in this country...

Owners must be held responsible also!!

Not sure if this dog was registered or not, but the owners MUST be held responsible too!! I know some breeds are deemed 'menacing or dangerous', but take a look at the ones that attack and their owners! We have owned English Staffordshire Bull Terriers for over 10 years, with young and growing children. It bugs me when you see a report and it says "staffy cross". Responsible owners often get looked down upon because of the breed they own. Majority of the problems come down to the owners of these dogs that attack.

Interesting

Mmm sad we point the blame straight at the dog. Feel for the owner losing their dog. Sadly like children also us as parents are responsible for how dogs or pets are raised trained and responsibilities and should be held responsible. Poor dog the other victim here. Yes such are attracted to the breed and so many are like their children unwanted at birth hence the push by SPCA for free desexing.

I remember

When there was a huge debate whether to allow those monster dogs into New Zealand. The public generally didn't want them, but dog breeders had friends in high places. The claim was made that they would be sold only to responsible people.. yeah right! It's the weak people that have dogs like that.. using the dogs mean-ness to make themselves look good.. ie gangmembers.. Owners of any dog that attacks a human should be hit with the full force of the law.. oh yes.. thats a slap on wrist.

Dangerous Breed.....really

Any breed of dog can be dangerous, its not just pitbulls, there are dog bites all the time but the media only ever print about the "pitbull type" dogs that attack, i have come across some little dogs that can be just as nasty, i realise they dont cause as much damage, but they still bite. I myself dont like pitbulls, but have actually met some that are beautiful family pets, i think alot of this comes down to the owners. I have 3 large dogs and not one of them has ever bitten because from day one they were taught not too. Its just a shame that most people that own these types of dogs seem to think it reflects on how tuff they look, and its the dog that ends up suffering when it bites because it has never been taught respect by their owners. I hope this little girl recovers quickly and i hope this dosnt install fear of her having her own dog one day as they can be a great joy when brought up correctly.

take a look in the mirror

In the '70s they blamed Dobermans, in the '80s they blamed German shepherds, in the '90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull. when will they start blaming the humans? take a look in the mirror, its not about the dog or breed, its about the OWNER!
