Band rocks out with furry friends

Five ambitious nine-year-olds are enlisting the talents of some furry friends from the Tauranga SPCA in their new music video.

The girls, who make up Pahoia School's rock/pop band Pahoia United, have partnered up with Tauranga SPCA and are using some of the centre's kittens, dogs, rabbits and even a lizard in their latest music video ‘Best Friends Forever'.

The band has been working together since 2011, writing and recording original songs and this is the group's second music video.

At the beginning of this year the group approached Tauranga SPCA saying they wanted to support the charity and when it came to filming their latest video, they took the opportunity to showcase some of the SPCA's youngest talent.

Band coordinator Billy Edwards, who writes the songs and shoots their videos, says filming was 'a bit of a nightmare” but very rewarding.

'They worked really hard.”

Tauranga SPCA's community liaison and education officer Nicole Fensom supplied many of the animals for the video, including her own dog Gus.

'It was hilarious. We had kittens going in all directions. It took hours just to film a couple of shots.”

The entire video took two days to film, but some of the animals didn't make the final cut due to a lack of acting skills.

'One of the puppies was more interested in chewing on the girls.”

Nicole says the SPCA is really pleased to be partnering with the girls.

'They are such a good band. I'm sure we will work with them again.”

‘Best Friends Forever' is Pahoia United's second song, following ‘Life's Not Fair'. The band hopes to have four songs completed by the end of the year.

So much for 'never work with kids and animals' - you girls and your furry co-stars are AWESOME! And such a catchy song; I'm sure I'll be humming that for the rest of the day! What a great experience - congratulations to you all on a stellar perfomance!
