Rena from the air

Salvage crews are building platforms and installing pipe and pump works aboard Rena, the container ship grounded on the Astrolabe Reef for 11 days.

This series of dramatic photos was taken today by Maritime New Zealand photographer Graeme Brown from a Royal New Zealand Navy Seasprite helicopter.

The custom built platforms from which workers will operate an Archimedes pump to remove oil from the ship's tanks.

Rena is on an about 20 degree list.

Damage to Rena on the reef is severe.
