UPDATED 11.44AM: Four people were lucky to escape a burning car on the Kaimai Range this morning without injury.

Greerton station officer Bill Rackham says the vehicle was coming down the hill towards Tauranga, when a gentleman with his daughter and her two children noticed the vehicle was on fire.

'They had some difficulty pulling over because it (the fire in the engine bay) affected the brakes.

'It was very fortunate for them really that they got out of the car without any injury or any accident as well.

'It was a very fortunate outcome, although they have lost everything in the vehicle.”

There is no indication what caused the vehicle to catch fire.

Bill praised the driver saying the vehicle was stopped near the end of a downhill passing land and the driver managed to stop the car off the road.

Greerton Fire Brigade was called out at 9.19am.
