McCaskie escapes jail

Vickie McCaskie is to serve four months home detention after pleading guilty to stealing $41,000 from a woman's bank account.

The 45-year-old stood in the dock at the Tauranga District Court this morning and started to cry when Judge Cameron Bennett read her sentence.

Vickie McCaskie.

McCaskie will serve 200 hours community service and has been ordered to pay back the full amount of money she stole, in addition to four months of home detention.

McCaskie was convicted last year of a separate crime, which involved stealing $25,000 from a customer when she worked as a teller at a bank in Cherrywood.

She was sentenced to community service for the offending, which she has since completed.

'It has been made crystal clear to me that who have done everything to right your wrongs,” Judge Bennett said to McCaskie.

'The appropriate sentence would normally be 12 months in jail for this scale of offending, but given the material in front of me and the effort made by you, home detention would be more appropriate.”

Judge Bennett also ordered McCaskie to pay reparation at $25 a week, to be reviewed when she gets a full time job.

'You will need to pay back every penny. If you don't, you will come back to court and face a jail sentence.”

Inadequate Sentence

Same offence, second time, and only home detention (less time) and community service again! Presumably had ample opportunity first time to come clean but probably thought she could get away with it. How many other victims are there? The "effort made" has presumably only been since caught second time and to avoid jail - wonder if she is at all contrite? And repay at $25 p.w. will take 31 years! Maybe has good connections to avoid imprisonment??

Oh dear...

Wow, look she's had her hair foiled! that's at least $100 bucks. That's a months worth of reparation. What a joke. She should be locked up.

Cops wife

Repeat offenders should be thrown in prison, not a wet bus ticket on the wrist. Even if they are sleeping with a cop.

What a bloody dispicable thing to do, she is just a total greedy B#$%^, did not have a care in her body at the time of this offence & now she is crying in the dock because she got caught, she & the other women who have been caught of same offences stealing huge amounts of money for their own personal greed should all ROT!!!!!! cops wife or NOT.

Put the crime where it belongs

The comments above disgust me about her husband (you and I know nothing of what this may have done to their marriage.....he has not committed a crime and is trying to repay her debt. I don't condone for one minute what this woman did and I personally think she should have served time in prison.

Serve the time for the Crime

kiaora2U - I assume that the inference of the comments, whilst perhaps crudely put, is that she has been offered some leniency because of her husbands employment. That is certainly how it appears as others have been imprisoned for much less.

Looks like she has the money to get her hair done? She should be paying back her victims first.

Not Fair

This is so not fair. If she wasn't a cops wife she would have got more. And yes she can obviously pay to have her hair done! Im struggling to survive and i haven't been able to have my hair done in almost a year!! Make her pay more than $25!! and more home detention. Other people get more for their petty little crimes than she has for this crime

That is an old photo.....the frosting has grown out....Did you read my remarks...I DO NOT CONDONE WHAT THIS WOMAN DID and I think she should go TO JAIL.....BUT......her husband even though he is a policeman DID NOT DO A CRIME in fact he is trying to pay the debt.....If she got leniency because he is a policeman then that IS ALSO WRONG......
