Blood boils as tower goes up

A Tauranga resident is disgusted by the erection of a cellphone tower right outside her home.

The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is angry with the Tauranga City Council and phone company 2 Degrees, which owns the cellphone tower.

This 2 Degrees cellphone tower is located by a kitchen window.

'I am disgusted with the council, who think it's okay to allow these towers to go up willy-nilly,” says the woman.

'I think, they think it's okay, ‘we don't live there so it doesn't bother us' – they are sitting on a toilet constipated, thinking who can we annoy next.”

The cellphone tower is located right outside her kitchen window.

'I got a letter a month ago saying it was going up. I have rung the council and they gave me a number for Auckland who told me to contact 2 Degrees and I got no answer there.

'I have tried to contact Simon Bridges, he wasn't there, so I left a message only to be told it wasn't their problem. I've got no response from anyone.”

The irate resident says no amount of letters or information is going to make her change her mind about not liking the tower.

'I have been sent pamphlets to tell me the cellphone tower will not affect me and I was so interested in that, I threw it in the rubbish.”

She says surveyors were outside her home a few weeks ago.

'I kept bailing them up asking them what they were surveying. They went all around the paddock and didn't directly answer the question.

Three and a half years ago, 2 Degrees sent a letter asking to put up a tower at the back of her section. They offered her $7000.

'I didn't know if this was a lump sum or to be paid each year. I rang the person back and said ‘No, no, no, no, I don't want a tower anywhere near my property'.

'And now I have one outside my kitchen window – so really I didn't have a say.”

2 Degrees communications manager Michael Bouliane says they announced in February a plan to invest an additional $100m in their network over the next two years.

'Tauranga is an important city and we want our network to continue to meet the growing demands of smart phone and data device users there,” says Michael.

'By further investing in our network – and building mobile phone sites, we will continue to bring the benefits of increased competition – better value and better service – to the residents of Tauranga and throughout New Zealand.”

Tauranga City Council group communication advisor Alison Clifford says there are many factors which need to be considered when granting resource consent for cellphone towers.

TCC and 2degrees are thoughtless clowns

THIS IS WRONG.I bet the RMA consent for this cellphone site was not advertised and is a non notified consent. It is irrelevant what perceived commercial benefit it brings to Tauranga. Citizens rights are paramount.

compensation

This knocks at least 100k off the value of their house. 2degrees and the council should be made to pay for such losses.

Not Good Enough

I have watched in the last 2 weeks as these have popped up all over Tauranga. We pay rates and don't even get a say to where they go but by god if we do anything to our own property watch the council come down on us. Why can't they go up in our local parks and reserves instead of right outside someones house.

You can be absolutely sure that one of these eyesores will NEVER be put up outside the mayors or a councilors home! They seem to be the only citizens with any rights here in Tauranga!

cell towers

Also these towers are right next to schools and childcare centres! It's not good enough when Auckland residents can kick up a big fuss and they don't get erected, yet we have no say about the potential risks to our children!

a total disgrace!

I have seen these ugly symbols of "progress" going up around our lovely city. And my wife and I did notice the one in question and commented how very sorry we felt for the owner of the property. Its also near a primary school. I never cease to be disgusted with the total lack of thought and care of the council towards the people of this city. Have we no rights? And as for 2 degrees I will never consider using their network on principle. Yes and the council should pay this poor homeowner for their loss of equity in their property. Please everyone remember this and other incidents such as boobs on bikes when elections come round. Murray Guy for mayor maybe? At least he fights for people's rights. Its all a disgrace!

ROAD FRONTAGE

Looks to be "out front" alright, bet the Mayor would make things change if that was outside his front door!

Right by the kitchen window?

Posted on 31-07-2011 10:40 | By Matt

Doesn't look like it's right by the kitchen to me. In fact it's the corner of Otumoetai Road and Brookfield Terrace, which also features a power box - is the resident complaining about the power box too, which wasn't there a few years ago? What about the high tension overhead power cables and sub station situated 50 metres from this corner? The cellphone "tower" looks more like a light post anyway - as as for someone saying it would knock $100K off the house value. Come on!

Move up

When electricity was invented people were told not to sit under the light for too long!!! Where would we be now if we didn't have that? Move with the times.

I'm with Matt and Marte2-where the bloody hell are they supposed to put them? My kids go to that school and will surely suffer more in the new dental clinic than through cell-tower voodoo. More disturbing is that anyone would go with 2degrees in the first place :)

Right underneath the tower is the place to be. The tower's signal is designed to travel as far as possible - outwards not downwards. If it were transmitting light, you wouldn't be able to see it.

What interests me is that this resident was sent information, and "just threw it away". How can you make an informed opinion if you don't read and understand the information sent to you?

Simon Bridges Lack of Interest

Posted on 31-07-2011 13:05 | By Jitter

Unfortunately you are wasting your time contacting Simon Bridges on something "negative" like this. Unless it is going to benefit his personal career, is positive, includes a photo good opportunity and follows the party line he is just not interested.I know from personal experience. As it required a "non notifiable consent" council won't give a toss either. As the placing of cell phone towers does involve the public they should all require "a notifiable consent" so that at least the residents affected are given the chance to have their say before a final decision is made.

Sympathise

I feel sorry for this lady. It will certainly impact in some way on her property value. How about a rates rebate TCC? I would not like to see this outside my property & agree with others comments that you would be unlikely to see a cell tower outside Simons' or the Mayors house.

You all use cellphones and want better coverage and competition to keep the price down, get over it.

2 degrees bashing?

Posted on 31-07-2011 14:23 | By peterin

Hey, what's wrong with being with 2 degrees? I joined up with them a little while ago because they have been the competition in the market for mobile service and have forced other dominant providers to play ball. Same as Vodafone when they kicked off. They ALL have reception towers. Just driving down Cameron road this morning after reading this story I noticed a stack of different ones in both semi-industrial and residential areas. I choose not to lose any sleep over frequency waves!

2 degrees. this is wrong

i will never go in for a 2 degrees deal. never in tauranga

Radiation!

Posted on 31-07-2011 16:43 | By bopguy

A block down and across the road is a fairly large substation. Heavy duty wires flow beside this property - you can see them in the photo. And she's worried about a cell tower?!

Rate Payershave no Say

I/m with the lady, there should have been more consultation and even more so some financial compensation - it will affect sale of that property as one view has already mentioned when taken to see the property - it sticks out like a sore thumb - where are the councillors when you need them (swanning around on a junket overseas to view a poo station somewhere), once again you vote them in and thats the last you hear from them......... Feel so sorry for that lady she has rights also tho you would not think so!!

Typical attitude

Posted on 31-07-2011 19:32 | By Inconvenient Truth

Better location would be commercial or industrial zone. But this is all about Not in My Backyard. Fair enough if all the complainers don't own cellphones. But that's unlikely in this age. If worried about electromagnetic radiation people should live in a tent instead of a wired house. But the thing that get's me is her statement that no amount of information will change her mind. You just can't reason with some people.

A vote of no confidence in sneaky behaviour

Posted on 31-07-2011 20:26 | By Insider

Perhaps these cellphone towers are justified perhaps not.The argument is with the process and the Resource Consent applications that should be advertised and hearings held.Hiding things away from the public view is not a way to make friends or inspire trust.

The substation is actually right next to the property pictured in the photo. As in over the back fence.

Silly

Posted on 01-08-2011 07:11 | By andrewcnz

If the woman was that worried about a cell site going up near her house then she should have considered selling after receiving the offer and information 3 years back. Because it is obvious that two degrees mobile limited wanted to put up a site in the area. And if she did not want to get paid to have a site her back yard someone else would. And in this case it was TCC!I would be more worried about power substation a couple of doors down and those high voltage over head lines.

Hmmmm

''I have been sent pamphlets to tell me the cellphone tower will not affect me and I was so interested in that, I threw it in the rubbish.”' This statement sums it up really.

Wrong

Posted on 01-08-2011 15:53 | By Colleen Spiro

Would any of you want it plonked outside your back lawn....there would have been a better option in a space somewhere, where it was not so close to housing....People should have a say...

A complaint too far!

Posted on 02-08-2011 11:43 | By rayge11

Whilst I agree that it was wise to turn down the offer to have such a facility situated on the house property, there is no reasonable argument for it not being where it is now located. As other commentators have observed there are other visual 'obstructions' indicated in the photo, and many similar facilities appear in hundreds of other locations around the city. Power poles, high tension wires, etc, etc, abound and must do so to provide the necessitites for modern life. Not in your backyard? If your neighbour had been offered the initial compensation, and accepted, you would not have had any further recourse, I suspect. Find out a bit more about the effects (or otherwise) of cell phone towers, if that is your concern but the pole itself, it looks ok combined with the street light, to me! And it isn't, really, right outside your kitchen window!

Too close?

Posted on 03-08-2011 20:46 | By CNS

You think this one is too close? You should see the one that has just gone up about half way along Levers Road. In 2009 the Green Party called for an independent review of the risks associated with low-level exposure to electromagnetic radiation, and a review of the National Environmental Standard for telecommunications facilities, which has allowed the proliferation of celltowers without community consultation. Neither of these reviews has yet occurred.
