Ref ‘down trou’ earns two year ban

Bay of Plenty District Health Board member and former Bay of Plenty rugby player Matua Parkinson is banned from playing rugby until 2013.

He has received the ban after he heckled and ‘down-trou'd' a referee during a club rugby match in June between Te Puke and Rangataua.

Matua Parkinson is banned from playing rugby for two years after he pulled a referee's pants down during a match he was spectating.

The abuse of this referee was reported to the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, which held a judicial committee hearing about the incident on Wednesday, June 29.

The committee reserved its decision, but banned Matua, a former New Zealand 7s player, from playing rugby until determining the outcome.

The decision to ban Matua from playing rugby until 2013 was released at the weekend, with Bay of Plenty Rugby Union CEO Mike Rogers saying this penalty comes as no surprise as 'it's consistent with the guidelines established in the New Zealand rugby disciplinary handbook”.

'Obviously the committee felt strongly that no player should undermine officials and certainly in this instance that's been the case,” says Mike.

'He has been dealt with as any other player would be dealt with and regardless of his involvement in the game historically he has acted outside the rules of the game and he needs to be held accountable for those.”

Mike says the role officials play in club rugby matches is important to the sport in the region, particularly when they are volunteers.

'They are volunteers and they need to be treated with respect.”

Matua has expressed remorse and regret for the incident and Mike hopes something good can come from this.

'Hopefully he turns this into a positive and understands this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and as someone who has contributed to the game, hopefully he will turn this around and contribute positively to the game in the future.”

Matua has the right to appeal the decision.

SunLive was unable to contact Matua this morning for comment.

Good job, BOPRU. Matua Parkinson acted like a **** and deserves everything he got. Too often guys like this get carried away with the cult of personality surrounding them and do idiotic things like this because they think they are entertaining. Let's just hope he has the good grace to accept his punishment and not waste everybody's time with an appeal.

Long overdue

He has been behaving like this for a long time. I was abused and sworn at by him several years ago when officiating, but it appears that particular incident was lost or overlooked. The chickens have come home to roost.

What A BIG W@^%$*

what a waste of space he is. How demoralising it would have been for that ref, regardless whether he was doing a good job or not he did not deserve that outrageous behaviour. ****

Bad Example

A very bad example to Maori young people by one of their own who holds a very responsible position, and to all young people. Is this how he behaves at Bay of Plenty Health Board meetings when something does not go the way he wants ? Not the behaviour of a so called "responsible" adult.

Matua waste of space

A clear example of a rugby head who uses rugby to get into politics through the "back door" and cant compose himself on the field let alone in a board room.

'funny' that.

This guy gets his just deserts for misbehaving in public and causing offense, yet when someone organizes a half naked drive-by through the entire town it is ok and the public who don't want this are ignored and name called for being prudes. How two-faced is that?!

Do the prank get the spank.

Didn't think the BOPRU would have the balls to impose a fit and proper punishment.Well done BOPRU you got the penalty almost right even if it is a little light and if he appeals he will cop even more.Yobbo behaviour has no place needs to be stamped out and this individual has a bit of history it seems.

I see Matua is continuing his "lack of self control" behaviour. Has he paid for the microphone he threw at an election meeting yet? Obviously Miss-informed Tauranga citizens and ratepayers voted for him to represent them ? I wonder how many others have slipped through and are in positions responsible for Tauranga's wellbeing and community without relevant experience and self-control etc. Voting is a serious business.

What a joke!

Why is this *** still a BOP District Health Board member? What does it say for their credibility when a person like him has any say whatsoever in important health issues! Get rid of him.
