New sandpit for waterfront

There’s a new sandpit at the waterfront, replete with awesome digger. Photos: Ryan Wood.

A new sandpit has been installed on the waterfront, complete with a working toy digger, as part of the council's ‘Access to Water' project.

The sandpit was ‘opened' today by the mayor and a group of kids, who took to digger with all the gusto of budding engineers.

'Use this digger to help us build our new pier, pontoon and tidal stairs,” is the sandpit's slogan. It will remain on the waterfront for kids to enjoy until Easter, when it will be reassessed – although if it proves popular, it could well stay.

Tauranga City Council General Manager - City Transformation Jaine Lovell-Gadd says it's a welcome addition to the play area.

'It sends an important message that the waterfront is still open for play,” she says.

'It's like a mini-version of what's happening in the construction site.”

Mayor Greg Brownless was in attendance, and thanked HEB Construction for keeping the area open and accommodating people who wanted to use the waterfront.

Mayor Greg Brownless sits on the edge of the sandpit as kids enjoy the digger behind him.
