Police are asking for the public's help to locate Conwaye Brown who is wanted in relation to an aggravated robbery and assault on police in Morrinsville.

A police spokesperson says they received reports of the 31-year-old brandishing a hammer and acting aggressively towards members of the public on Coronation Road on Tuesday, October 25.

An officer attended the incident but when Brown saw the patrol car he raised the hammer in the air and started running towards the vehicle.

'As the officer tried to drive out of the way to call for back-up, the offender struck the car twice with the hammer on the driver's side.

'After hitting the patrol car, and while still brandishing the hammer, the offender took a large knife from his bag and approached a man who had got out of his Ford Falcon XR 6 car to talk to a friend.

'He demanded the man's car keys, before getting in the vehicle, realising the keys were still in the ignition and driving away at speed.”

When he failed to stop for police, the officer began following him through Morrinsville's residential streets, but later abandoned the pursuit due to the risks created by the offender's excessive speed.

'Brown currently has a warrant to arrest for failing to appear in court on other matters. Police want to talk to him in relation to this incident and are keen to hear from anyone who may know of his current whereabouts.”

The stolen Ford Falcon XR6 - registration FQJ176 – was last seen being driven towards Coromandel and police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen it since Tuesday night, or who knows where it is now.

Anyone with information is asked to contact acting detective senior sergeant Jason Perry of Waikato Police on 07 858 6200.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
