Hanging truck cleared

State Highway 2 is clear of interference after two tow trucks were used to pull a truck from ditch after it crashed there and was left protruding over the road.

The crash happened at about 9.30am and caused minor delays initially as Te Puke bound motorists were forced to manoeuvre around the protrusion.

Queues of traffic formed as emergency services worked to release the truck from its hang over a ditch.

A caller to SunLive's news tip line, 0800 SUNLIVE, says Tauranga bound traffic was just a fraction slower there as motorists slowed to have a look at the crash.

The road closures took place when emergency services attempted to pull the truck from the ditch.

A first attempt to free the truck from its hang.

The truck was carrying a load of asphalt and one tow truck was not enough to free it from its ditch hang.

The closures necessary to free the truck resulted in significant queues of traffic forming from the crash site in both directions.

This traffic is now cleared.

There is no injury to the driver of the truck and it is believed the truck, once pulled from the ditch, was driven away by him.

Thanks to SunLive and the passerby who called to spread the word on this traffic disruption. my only question is, why are the local police and emergency services not making better use of this excellent news service to keep people better informed and reduce congestion in such cases? surely it's in everyone's best interests to get the alert out, as it seems SunLive strives to do, so further mayhem can be avoided?
