New overbridge for underpass

Another milestone of the Maungatapu underpass being built took place this morning with the the new pedestrian and cycling overbridge being lifted into place.

The bridge is part of the underpass being built beneath the Maungatapu roundabout.

Contractors used a crane to hoist the bridge into place and New Zealand Transport Agency says the underpass will separate state highway and local traffic.

The Agency says it will reduce congestion at peak times and making travel safer for pedestrians and cyclists by taking out the climb up the Welcome Bay and Hairini sides of the ridge.

It's expected the underpass will cost $45 million, take three years to complete and is the fourth stage of the Hairini Link project.

The Hairini Link is also part of the $455 million Tauranga Eastern Link, the $68 million Route K and the upcoming $102 million Baypark to Bayfair project which is the Agency's long term plan to create a ring road around the city.

Crap- it has not taken too long, the project started in July 2015 and is estimated to take 2.5 years do a little research before commenting. @overit you obviously haven,t been on a construction site where EVERYONE has to wear safety vests/coats.

Leave the toll alone, without it we all have to pay and the road will be unusable due to traffic... I like it the way it is!

Usual people

The usual suspects are in here having a whinge. This project is moving at incredible pace, and remarkably is having almost no effect on surrounding traffic. NZTA is doing a fantastic job of managing this project.
