A motorcyclist has been taken to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition after a crash on State Highway 33, in Paengaroa.

SH33 is closed at the McKenzie Road intersection as the serious crash unit investigates the scene.

Motorists are being diverted down Wilson Road South until the highway is back open.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says emergency services were called to the crash around 6pm after a collision between a motorbike and car.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
