Autumn has arrived and the Bowentown Bar has been very changeable with the fronts that have been going past creating big swells at times. Water temperatures are holding up well for this time of the year.
Snapper.
For any keen fisherman, it doesn't matter if they are fishing inside or outside the bar as there are plenty of fish being caught. Blue Gum Bay has been firing well inside the harbour against Matakana. We picked up some nice fish against Matakana during a dusk fish in as shallow as four feet. The snapper really give a great fight in shallow water. Good numbers of trevally are still being caught inside the harbour.
In the open water, on the outside of the bar, some nice snapper are being caught. They can move around quite a bit, with one day's very successful place not producing anything the next day. A good sounder can be a very valuable tool to find the fish. We are finding that the left hand side outside of the bar has been the most productive. Skippys are around in good numbers but are generally being smaller fish.
The Bowentown Boating and Sport Fishing Club are having two fishing contests this month. The kids fishing contest on Sunday, April 17 and the Easter fishing contest on Sunday, April 24. These contests are open to non members and are inside the harbour only.
