GNS Science is reporting an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred 40km northeast of Tauranga on Sunday night.
The earthquake struck at 8.30pm and at a depth of 190km. This is deep, with the February 22 earthquake in Christchurch occurring at a depth of 5km.
No tsunami was reported as triggered.

That is VERY deep indeed, perhaps something is moving and we should be cautious. It is very unlikly that a tsunami would result from that of course, there needs to be some seabed movemetn to displace the sea water for that to happen. NE makes it not so far from White Island, one can only hope that all is ok.

Something is moving from deep down most likely magma for one of the three volcanos the reside under water between White Island and Mayor Island.
