Aspen tree firewood for charity

Wood from the Aspen tree is being donated to the Tauranga City Sunrise Lions Club for it to sell as a fundraiser.

The Aspen tree has undergone considerable pruning.

The funds raised will go to an initiative that assists cancer sufferers receive medical treatment monthly in Melbourne.

The wood is from the severe pruning undertaken on the tree this week after a significant limb fell on Monday, nearly crushing parked cars below.

The black cottonwood tree at the intersection of Willow Street and McLean Street was pruned back by Tauranga City Council arborists to prevent another similar fall occurring.

The pruning is expected to continue on Thursday.
