Police have launched an investigation into the girl's death in Opotiki and want witnesses to help piece together her last movements.

Emergency services were called to Goring St about 3.45am.

St John ambulance paramedics treated the girl at the scene but she died en route to hospital.

"At this stage, it appears a 14-year-old local female has been struck by a vehicle; however, inquiries are continuing to confirm exactly what has occurred," police said.

Goring St resident Lynn Roberts said the area was pitch black at night with only minimal lighting and no footpaths.

She wasn't sure if that had contributed to the accident but said installing both could help keep people safer.

Roberts said the Opotiki College school ball was held on Saturday night and there had been drinking and after parties going on in the area. "When the ball is happening at the school, it's a big deal. It's a small town so I don't think it's going to take long to find out what happened."

She said a neighbour had already spoken to police about the car that may have been involved.

Police were trying to find the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident and were appealing to the driver to come forward.

It is thought the girl was at a family member's house before the incident. The next of kin are currently being contacted.

Information can be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
