The highway between Te Puke and Tauranga is closed following a major head-on accident that has trapped the drivers of both vehicles.

Bay of Plenty Police are at the scene of the crash at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Manoeka Road, Te Puke.

The sole occupants of each vehicle are trapped inside.

The road will be closed while the serious crash unit attend.

Diversions in place are: car traffic only via Te Puke Quarry Road onto Rocky Cutting Road, and through to Welcome Bay Road.

Police say these roads are not suitable for heavy vehicles.

"As the diversion roads are narrow, unsealed roads, we would encourage motorists to consider delaying their journey for at least two hours to avoid delays and congestion."
