Cyclist injured in collision with dog

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after his bike collided with a dog in Maketu this morning.

Police, St John Ambulance and Maketu Fire Brigade were called to Wilson Rd North following initial reports of a dog attack just before 9.30am.

Maketu Fire Brigade chief fire officer Shane Beech says the man was riding down a hill when it appears a dog came running out of a nearby driveway and into the cyclist's path.

'The biker has been unable to avoid the dog and hit it, which caused the bike rider to go head over tail and land on the road.”

Shane says the cyclist, believed to be in his 30s, received several cuts and bruises and was taken to Tauranga Hospital by St John Ambulance for observation.

He doesn't know what type of dog it was, as it was back on the owner's property by the time firefighters arrived.

Shane says it was clear the cyclist wasn't a novice.

'He had all the right gear on and the bike looked like it cost quite a considerable amount of money.”

"Police, St John Ambulance and Maketu Fire Brigade were called" - you can bet that wasn't cheap. And medical? Or do we all pay via ACC? And then there's the damage to his bike.
