Teen injured in collision

UPDATE 12.45PM: Police are pleading with cyclists to wear high visibility clothing after a teenage cyclist and a car collided on Courtney Road this morning.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Ramsden says the teen was taken to Tauranga Hospital with a shoulder injury following the crash at 9am.

Police speak to witnesses of a collision on Courtney Road.

'It appears that he crashed into a turning vehicle.”

Nigel says the 13-year-old was wearing a helmet, but had low visibility clothing on.

'Police would advise that both drivers and cyclists take extra care when turning or cycling alongside stationary traffic.

'Cyclists should always wear a helmet, high visibility clothing and take extra care when overtaking stationary traffic on the left.”

Nigel says often other motorist turning do not see a cyclist who are often obscured by the stationary traffic.

'Motorist should always check their mirrors for cyclist when turning.”
