Arrows won't fell Indian rider

Slings and arrows won't stop Johnny Dodds riding his horse through Tauranga's streets.

The local horserider, who has been playing the part of a Red Indian since learning to ride horses bareback as a teenager, has been criticised recently for not cleaning up his horse's mess.

Keen horserider Johnny Dodds enjoys riding his horse through the streets of Tauranga.

He has also come under fire by residents for riding his horse on footpaths and along streets.

When SunLive caught up with him in Mount Maunganui he said he always tries to be considerate of others.

'I always clean up if I see the horse has left anything, but I've never had any complaints about horse manure.”

Johnny, who dresses in traditional Indian costume with war paint and feather headdress, and likes to go by the name Crazy Horse, has become a more common sight around town in recent months.

Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy complained after witnessing his horse defecating on the footpath at the Tauranga waterfront playground opening.

'The Strand waterfront and new playground is not the place to ride a horse in safety, nor the place to allow a horse to defecate and not remove the same.”

Johnny, who likes to exercise his horse Penny, says he tries to have a bit of fun on his weekly rides with Penny (his horse) from the paddock in Otumoetai to Mount Maunganui. He always tries to make way for pedestrians riding on the grass verge where possible.

'Most people are really friendly and a lot stop and want to give her a pat.”

If people are unsure of how to behave or are afraid of horses he encourages them to move to the side and let him ride by.

Johnny also regularly takes his horse Sid across to Matakana Island – with the horse swimming about 1km across the deepest part of the channel.

'I've been doing this for years. I've grown up with horses and have always loved the way the Indians treat their horses.”

He believes his interest in horses comes from his mother's family who were gypsies.

'I'm sure that's why I love riding and going on trips.”

Wheres the Lone Ranger??

Posted on 05-07-2013 08:29 | By Sambo Returns

or in this case the Park Ranger!!!, exercise your horse by swimming to Matakana by all means, but to ride through busy city streets is irresponsible, and down right dangerous, forget the manure part, as if a truck backfires going across the bridge, the Indian is going to have more than manure on his hands trying to control a spooked horse on the pavement!!!!, if he wants to become a celebrity, maybe he should follow in his relations footsteps and join the circus.

Well, Tonto

Back to the prairie where you and your horse belong Mr Red Indian, not our busy city roads. An accident waiting to happen.

@Sambo returns. How many vehicles, let alone trucks, have you heard backfire over the past 20 years?

Johnny - use the horse manure to reseal a few driveways. Your old mum would be proud.

Most communities have a character or two

But this is Tauranga where a sense of community and humor seem to be missing. As Johnny says, he cleans up if he notices the horse has pooped. That's more than some dog owners (most dog owners are great though). The story says Cr Murray Guy complained, so what? It's election year and some councillors seem to have their names in the media a lot lately.

Go Johnny Go

No actually please stay! finally someone and something to give this stuck up boring town a little diversity. Too all you goody good's out there get alife. Like Johnny has. And Sambo Returns why bother you have no idea what you are talking about. You obviously can't read very well... Johnny's mum was a gypsy not from the circus kinda different. And to those of you worried about the horse in the traffice causing problems get over it! There are more people on our roads durnk and under the influence of drugs that cause a greater danger to everyone else on the road than Johnny and his lovely horse. Fact: There is a horse treck that goes to Matakana Island on a regular basis so Johnny is not the only one to swim his horse across tha channel! Race horses are trained in the water so maybe you all want to get the SPCA on to them aswell. Best low impact acrobic excercise that anyone, animal or beast can do. leave the poor bugger alone and get a life people. Your lovely 300k playground got a little horse poo on it whoops. At least you could see the horse poo unlike what the drunks and waywards leave for you and your children to play in every Thurs, Fri, and Sat night.

Horses!

We have had horses in Tauranga longer than some cars. Johnny gives a little of yesteryear back to Tauranga. As long as he takes care keep it up. One day saw him stop his horse so a scared Asian Girl could walk the street, this is the type of person he is. As for the horse plop, Cars and trucks put out a lot worse and polluting.

Abit OTT dont you think Murry Guy??? Whats this really all about mate? Leave the guy and his horse alone and worry bout making Tauranga a safer place to live. Picking on a horse and rider at your age. People being riding horses on roads for century's..actually before vehicles! Lighten up Tauranga...enjoy!

Don't worry about Murray Guy too much

It's election time soon and some councillors seem to have their names in the media all the time. I hope Cr Guy's complaint doesn't go anywhere. But he is a councillor and probably has a say in the bureaucratic busybody beast that Tauranga Council seems to be. Leave the man and the horse alone and concentrate on your council's spending urges.

Hmmmm

Posted on 06-07-2013 16:35 | By Murray.Guy

Hmmmm thinks I'm a bit over the top expressing concern when a horse rider chooses to ride amongst young children and leave his calling card in the play area - look at it, turn and canter off up the centre of the road. Hmmmm. I have no problem at all with a horse and rider in a public space, provided they respect the environment they are in. For Johnny Dodd to say, 'I always clean up if I see the horse has left anything, but I've never had any complaints about horse manure.” Somebody show him the video.

Councillor bs more offensive than horse s?

Posted on 06-07-2013 17:45 | By Annalist

I find the stuff that somes out of the mouths of some councillors more offensive than a character on a horse that probably gives a lot of joy to people including kids. Just makes me think it's election year and maybe some of our councillors are getting nervous at the possible loss of their large pay packets? As for the video, Cr Guy, can you post it on Sunlive so we can see what is so horrific?

Show us the video Cr Guy

It would be good to see the video you mention, so please show it on Sunlive. They often show video clips. Just want to see for myself. I get a feeling it isn't so bad.

oh no! a guy has ridden a horse on the street in Tauranga! Oh my god it's terrible, someone call the fun police, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. We must not have any fun anywhere in this city especially if a councillors chidren might be scarred for life by seeing an Indian on a horse. What is this world coming to?

a bit of colour in a dull town

Posted on 11-08-2019 20:29 | By jencap

little bit of eccentricity ! I'm all for it. A bit of horse manure pales into insignificance when compared with the fumes and pollution from thousands of cars every day. As for the safety aspect, surely cars are a lot more dangerous to the public . I'm sure the rider has more control over the horse than a lot of car drivers.
