More than 80 pre-schoolers raced their bikes around a track at Memorial Park this morning in the Tykes on Trikes event as part of Bike Month.
Sport Bay of Plenty recreation advisor Nicki Scott says it was “fabulous” and follows the success of the same event held in Katikati on Tuesday, which attracted 50 pre-schoolers who had all decorated their bikes.
“We’ve got scooters, trikes and bikes – and they’ve been doing this really cool course we’ve got set up.”
The course included judder bars, stop and go signs, roundabouts and other road hazards for them to navigate, with the hope they will learn something while having fun. As part of the event Reuben the road safety bear showed children how to wear their helmets safely.
Rocket Bikes gave away tricycles at the Tauranga and Katikati events.
Stephanie McEachen, 4, decorated her bike for the event.
Penny Lyford, 4, rides in style.
