Fire and Emergency have attended a fire at a property in Gate Pa this evening.

Northern Fire and Emergency shift manager Karren Larkin says they arrived at what was thought to be a house fire at 5:26pm.

'On arrival what we thought was a small house fire was actually a bonfire down the back of the property.”

Karren says it is not uncommon for back yard fires to resemble house fires.

Three Fire and Emergency units attended the scene and the blaze was put out at 6:15pm.

A caller to 0800SUNLIVE says the fire looks to have occurred at a property that was engulfed in flames in June 2021.

The caller says the house appears to be abandoned.

The property has been uninhabitable since the fire last year. It was sold to a developer based in Christchurch after the fire. It is extensively graffitied and some transient people have been living there on & off. The fire was in the rubbish pile that has steadily been growing with people dumping on the site.
