Power is reported to be out to a number of homes in the Tauriko area.

Powerco says the outage was caused by a vehicle hitting a power pole in the area overnight.

About 44 properties are affected by the outage, the power company says in its website.

Waka Kotahi Transport Agency is also reporting down power lines on State Highway 29, near Redwood Lane.

"Due to downed power lines, there is traffic control in place with a temporary speed restriction of 50km/h.

A police spokesperson says they received a report just after midnight that a car had collided with a power pole on SH29.

"The lines were brought down in the crash and the power company was notified.

"The road was closed until they were able to isolate the lines."

Police say the driver was taken to hospital as a result of the crash.

"Road users are advised to take extra care."
