Investigations are underway into the cause of a house fire in Tauranga.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand received multiple calls to a house fire in Gate Pa around 9pm on Friday.

Northern communications shift manager Colin Underdown says the two-storey dwelling was "well-involved" when crews arrived at the scene.

Three fire crews from Tauranga and Greerton attended.

No one was reported inside.

Crews started with a defensive attacked, before doing an internal one, reports Colin.

"The fire was extinguished at 10.20pm.

"A fire safety investigator was called to the scene and may be back there this morning."

The road was closed for several hours while the firefighting operation took place.
