Veterans' golf

In last week's report The Nuggets pennant team was one step away from an outright win in the Waikato Veterans Association Zone Three Pennants final round robin competition, sitting at the head of the leader board, with Quartz only two points behind in second place.

Nuggets held it together and came away with a great win with 2218 cumulative points over six rounds, with Tahuna 2 runners up only two points behind with 2220.

Waihi's Quartz team was in third place with 2222, an excellent result.

Is it too much to ask Nuggets' team Allen Sarjant, Ken Purcell, John Giffney, Earle White, Maurice Joyce and Tim Parish in the District final at Paeroa on Monday May 10 to play their hearts out and come home with the winning trophy?

There were six rounds with 10 ten teams in this competition to reach the grand finale against the other Zones, and it is a remarkable result that there were only four points between first and third places.

The course was busy on Monday, April 26, with a number of Vets on the tee for an informal Haggle run by Rodger Bagshaw, and immediately following them was a very large group of green fee players from Auckland enjoying the peace and quiet of a country course.

Talking to them afterwards in some sort of stilted English and sign language, they indicated that all enjoyed the course very much and had a great day.

There was one heavy shower during the day, but otherwise conditions were very pleasant when the sun came out.

Women's golf - 18 holes

Players were up early and on the tee on Wednesday, April 28 in anticipation of playing 36 holes in the Nancy McCormick Foursomes, a national event in which the score from each Club's winning pair is forwarded to Golf NZ, and from there the winning pair is decided when all scores are on hand.

Players have the option of playing 36 holes on one day, or splitting the game into two rounds to play the second 18 holes on another day.

As it happened, most Waihi players finished on the same day, as the weather was perfect, but there were a few pairs who chose to split the game. Saturday ladies will play their 36 holes on May 1.

The day's haggle was set on the first 18 holes' foursomes.

Nine hole golf

It was wet again as usual on Tuesday, April 27, yet despite the weather, 24 turned up to play, waddling like ducks in their wet-weather clothing to play par and putting competitions.
