Project update on Harington Street Transport Hub

Tauranga City Council has completed a design review to determine the next stages of the Harington Street Transport Hub development.

The review follows the announcement in September that the project will be paused following the discovery that the seismic joints used were not up to standard.

Council's General Manager of Infrastructure, Nic Johansson, said the review process led by independent structural consultants, Holmes Consulting, has been thorough and has enabled council to identify the extent of the problem.

'During the review process we discovered that the building foundations will require strengthening. We are exploring possible solutions to remedy the foundation and seismic joint issues to determine what changes are needed to provide the required strengthening.

'The review has provided us with comfort that our challenge of the design was warranted,” said Nic.

Once the solution to remedy the issues has been determined the matter will be reported to Council before proceeding.
