Tauranga election candidates make statements

It's time to start thinking about who to vote for in this year's Tauranga City Council election.

To help the public decide, all election candidates have made public profile statements that can be read on the council's website or downloaded and printed from the same web-page.

The council's independent electoral officer, Warwick Lampp from electionz.com, says it's important for all Tauranga residents to have their say on deciding who should run the city for the next three years.

'One of the main reasons people fail to vote is that they don't know the candidates' policies and views, or take the time to find out about them” Warwick says.

'This profile booklet offers a great way to find out why the candidates believe you should vote for them.”

Voting papers will be delivered to homes from this Friday to Wednesday next week. They must be posted back in time to be received by midday on October 12.

The election will decide who will fill one mayor and 10 councillor positions at Tauranga City Council.

The STV voting system will be used for the first time, replacing the ‘first-past-the-post' system used previously.

Under STV, voters rank their candidates with numbers – 1, 2, 3, etc – rather than ticking a box. Voters can rank as many or as few candidates as they wish.

More information about STV is also available on Council's website.
