There is plenty for everyone to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, in Tauranga Moana. Here's what's coming up to round up the Matariki 2019 programme of events:

For the tamariki (kids)

• 29 Pipiri: Natural treasure children's workshop – a Matariki-inspired creative activity using natural resources collected locally, led by an inspired florist. Info

Concerts, workshops and learning for adults

• 30 Pipiri: Workshop: Ngā Mahi Tākaro – a workshop for adults in contemporary harakeke (flax) toy making. Info
• 30 Pipiri: Workshop: a Muka Experience – learn a non-traditional method of extracting muka (flax fibres), used to weave korowai or piupiu. Info
• 14 Hōngongoi: Workshop: WAI.TAI with Robyn Kamira – learn an original waiata in te reo Māori from the WAI.TAI set list. Info
• 14 Hōngongoi: WAI.TAI concert – a Te Reo fusion performance of Māori rhythm and vibes. Everything from subdued and ambient, to rocking and toe-tapping. Info

Exhibitions

• Open until 2 Hōngongoi (2 July): Te Whānau o Matariki – an Incubator Gallery group exhibition by established and emerging artists gathered as a family under the Matariki star. Info
• Open until 3 Hōngongoi (3 July): Ruahine by Michelle Estall – an exhibition of artwork based around contemporary Māori Ruahine, inspired by the writing of Te Iwa Makere Tamaki. Info
• Open until 3 Hōngongoi (3 July): Mātātoa – Mumu Returns – an exhibition of Taonga Pūoro artist Mumu (Will Moore). Info
• Open until 5 Hōngongoi (5 July): Matariki Hao Tāngata – a retrospective of black and white photography from Kapua Joy Bennett, at the central library. Info

Open until October 2019:

• Hā: Lewis Tamihana Gardiner – this pounamu artist is considered a leading contemporary figure in jade carving; known for his ability to produce work on a large scale as well as smaller intricate items. Info
• 'Blood Water Earth' by Louise Potiki Bryant and Santee Smith – an immersive video installation and ceramic display arising out of an international indigenous collaboration. Info
• Mātiro: A survey of photography by Kapua Joy Bennett – a retrospective of black and white photography from the 1970s -1980s. Info
