Fatal Pongakawa train crash victims named

The names of the two people who died in a crash between a car and train in Pongakawa on Wednesday have been confirmed by police.

Chary Alonzo Sabalande, 34, and Roymark Solomon Bering, 32, died in the crash.

Police say both arrived recently from the Phillippines and were living and working locally in the Western Bay of Plenty.

'Three other people were taken to hospital following the crash.

'Two remain in hospital in a critical condition, and one has been discharged.”

At 8.15am on Wednesday, fire services were notified of the crash at the intersection of Pongakawa School Road and State Highway 2 Te Puke East Road.

The serious crash unit are continuing their investigations into the crash.
