Tauranga man found guilty of historic rape

A Tauranga man has been found guilty of an historic rape.

Damien John McFetridge has been convicted in the Gisborne District Court this week, after being charged with three counts of rape and one representative charge of indecent assault.

All the offences involved a girl aged under 12.

The 47-year-old was arrested when a woman challenged him about his actions after seeing his Facebook profile about 30 years after the original offence.

Following a short trial, which started on Monday, McFetridge was convicted and remanded on bail by Judge Brooke Gibson for sentence on July 27.

During the trial, the court heard the victim complained at the time of the offending, but no action was taken.

She challenged him about his actions after seeing his Facebook profile about 30 years later in 2012, says prosecutor Jo Rielly. She went to police in 2014.

McFetridge admitted the representative indecent assault charge at the beginning of the trial.
