Heavy machinery causes outage

Thousands of people were left in the dark last night as heavy machinery hit a power pole at Port Tauranga causing a power outage.

Power was cut to 1140 customers after the machinery hit a pole shortly after 9pm on Sunday.

Power was cut to thousands of homes overnight.

Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh says the collision caused power lines to clash which tripped two circuits.

He says contractors restored service to most within the hour but 13 were without supply until shortly after midnight.

The outage affect people in Mount Maunganui, Bayfair and Papamoa.

On social media, people reported a power surge just before the outage, while others said their lights flickered and dimmed.

Another person reported seeing 'huge sparks from the powerlines near the port”.

No one was reported injured when the machinery hit the lines.
