UPDATED 1pm: Traffic backed up at Cambridge Road has cleared after earlier delays while emergency services dealt with a medical event.

A truck driver had pulled his truck over into a layby on the side of Cambridge Road and was found lying on the ground behind the vehicle.

'He has been rushed to hospital,” says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

'We believe it's either a medical event or a work related incident. It's not a crash of any sort.”

The scene was attended by ambulance, fire and police.

At one stage traffic was backing up along SH29 towards Tauriko from the scene about 150m from the Cambridge Road corner.
