Car crashes into Tauranga estuary

A car is stuck in the mangroves after crashing into the Waikareao Estuary.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says a car can be seen in the water near Waihi Road and Takitimu Drive.

The car is 30m offshore in the harbour.

The vehicle is 30m offshore and the sole occupant made his way out by the time emergency services arrived on the scene.

A reporter at the scene says the driver appears to have driven straight into the estuary.

"A police officer at the scene told me there were no skid marks to indicate he braked."

Police are speaking with the driver of the vehicle to try and determine what happened.
