Embracing our status as a top cruise destination

Thank you.

Without your warm and embracing smiles, and love for the Coastal Bay of Plenty we all call home, Tauranga wouldn’t have been named one of the top five cruise destinations in Australasia in the 2018 Cruise Critic Cruisers' Choice Awards.

According to Cruise Critic our region scored among the Top-Rated Australia & New Zealand Destinations. In addition, the Coastal Bay of Plenty also scores among the highest local friendliness satisfaction rate in New Zealand from passengers surveyed on the ships by cruise lines.

Yes we have the views from the top of Mauao, the stunning coastal scenery, beautiful and fertile kiwifruit orchards to tour and kayaking through caves of glow worms. But it is the pride and passion for the region, from those who both live here and visit, that ensures our visitors leave with a vibrant lasting memory and their own ‘smile’ of the region.

The value of these passengers, their reviews, and their propensity to return to the region and recommend the Coastal Bay of Plenty to their friends and families is vital to our economy.

The cruise industry is the world’s fastest growing sector of the travel industry and our region is no exception.

During the 2017-18 season, we estimate well over 50% of the 214,940 cruise passengers and crew stayed in Tauranga and the Mount, either through local tours or just seeing the sights themselves.

Statistics NZ’s Tourism Satellite Account 2017 reports that international cruise activity for the 2016-17 season injected $59m into the local Bay of Plenty economy.

Fantastic numbers predicted to trend upward with cruise visits expected to grow by 44.6 per cent between 2017 and 2025.

The future of our region as a desirable cruise destination is looking bright and there is plenty of untapped potential.

But for now, thank you for helping solidify our renowned welcoming spirit.

What do you think about businesses rejecting people’s job applications if they have tattoos?

I think it’s fine. Companies should be able to do what is right for their business.
They shouldn’t be able to discriminate someone for having tattoos.
I guess it depends where the tattoo is.
