“All clubs put their six best riders forward and their points are totalled over the weekend,” says Ash and, “we won with the most points”.
“It was so sweet to win best club and get these unreal individual results the year before Tauranga hosts the national championships.”
Kurt Pickard won the main pro event and beat Olympic rider Marc Willers.
“He’s very well conditioned and super fast,” says Ash.
Shania Rawson won the premier 11 year old title and was named girls captain of the Mighty 11 Team, which is made up of the best 11 year old BMX riders in the country.
Kieran Ngatai was named as boy’s captain and Richard Levis was selected too.
“They raced five races at the nationals to determine the top four boys and the top two girls to go to Australia in June to take on their top 11 year olds.”
Tauranga’s Maree McGarva won the 30-39 female cruiser title and Ash Rawson the 45-49 years male title.
Tauranga sent 65 riders to the Easter event where 850 people of all ages took part at the Sunset Coast BMX Club.
