Police chase abandoned in Tauranga

A high speed police chase in the Tauranga area has been abandoned due to the “dangerous nature” of the alleged offender’s driving.

Tauranga Police engaged in a pursuit of vehicle on State Highway 29, near Tauriko, around 10am, when it failed to stop for red and blue lights.

The driver of the vehicle led police on a chase along SH29 heading towards Mangatapu, reaching speeds of over 100kp/h at times.

Police say the driver of the vehicle drove around the Welcome Bay area before police were ordered to abandon the pursuit because of the dangerous nature of the alleged offender’s driving.

Callers to the 0800 SunLive news hotline say there were a number of police in the Welcome Bay area.

One man says the chase headed up Waitaha Road, through Osprey Drive and down to James Cook Road before heading out of Welcome Bay towards Papamoa.
