Boobops win gold at nationals

The Tauranga Boobop team is celebrating this weekend after winning the National Dragon Boat Championships in Ashburton.

A team of 20 paddlers, a caller and a sweep travelled to Ashburton at the end of March and brought home gold in the 500m, 2000m and silver in the 200m.

President Judith Butler says this is the second year running they have won the event.

She says this year’s event is the best their team has ever done.

“We decided we would have a little adventure and paddle around to the Sebel for scones and tea,” she said talking about their paddle to the Sebel Trinity Hotel today.

“We normally just go out Sulphur Point but we decided we would have a little adventure and come to the Sebel.”
The Tauranga Rotary Club was also in attendance to hand over donated funds for the Boobops hats.

Judith says they owe their win to having and amazing team and a great coach.

“We’ve got great camaraderie. I’ve been involved for years and the group we have this year is just so close. The camaraderie and support is just brilliant.

“We have the most amazing coach, Matt Cuthbert, and he’s been with us four years and he’s just amazing.”

The next event on the Boobops calendar is the World Breast Cancer Regatta in Florida in 2014.
“We’re looking forward to 2014, we’re going to try and get to Florida. There’s a world breast cancer regatta in Florida in October 2014.

“So that’s our next mission for the next two and half years.”
