Seventeen arrests as Strand turns ugly

Tauranga Police spent the early hours of the morning breaking up two major brawls on The Strand as Saturday night partygoers turned into Sunday morning brawlers.

Police sergeant Steve Hindmarsh says the fights took place well after midnight, between 2-3am and at least 15 people were involved in each fight.
Seventeen arrests were made, with charges including disorderly behaviour, breaching the liquor ban and being in possession of an offensive weapon.
There was a disappointing end to the evening for some spectators at the racing and fireworks display at Baypark Stadium last night, with Police investigating a number of thefts from vehicles. Steve says thieves appeared to be targeting 4WDs. GPS units and radar detectors were among the items taken.
Officers were also called to Maxwells Rd and Truman Lane to control youths throwing fireworks at passing cars.
It was a quiet night for St John’s Ambulance staff however, with only medical incidents to attend.
