PM opens Bay MP’s new base

Accessibility and keeping a finger on the pulse of Papamoa has helped Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller set up a new electorate office in the suburb.

And today he received the seal of approval from Prime Minister John Key, who officially opened the new office on Domain Road this afternoon.

When first elected into Parliament, Muller shared office space with Tauranga MP Simon Bridges, but the need to be based in the electorate, where it's easier to connect with his constituents, was important.

During the opening, Todd explained why it made sense to relocate given that Papamoa accounts for more than 50 per cent of his electorate.

'It's a very popular place to live,” he says, 'and a growing part, with 250 plus families a year.

'I thought it was important to be accessible to the community and to move from the centre of Tauranga.”

He also holds regular meetings with Welcome Bay and Omokoroa residents.

Prime Minister John Key says it is great for Todd to be at the heart of his electorate to address concerns ranging from taxes to ACC.

'At the end, politics is local, as we always try to say to people,” says the Prime Minister.

'The most important part of being local is being accessible and that's what the electoral office is about - serving the 50-to-60,000 people that make up the electorate.

'It's about being there to give them the support they need and hopefully direct them to the different places they need to go.”

John quipped it would have been better planned if Prince Harry was on hand for the opening.

'If I had been thinking straight, I would have had Prince Harry opening it for you,” he adds, 'then you would have had the national media opening your electorate office, which would have been cool.”

Following the opening John Key visited Zespri International in Mount Maunganui.

Todd will be at his new office every Monday and Friday when the House is sitting, and more frequently when it is in recess. Monthly clinics will also be held in Welcome Bay and Omokoroa.

Yep and Simons moved to 3rd Avenue too- must have been too much baggage at the old place and a bit to visible too.Question how is Papamoa the centre of the BOP electorate.

It seems that the BOP Electorate is a crescent shape sited around the Tauranga Electorate- Covers from The Mount around to Omokoroa-however , the concentration of actual people is very definitely in the Papamoa area with HUGE growth planned too - guess it makes more sense to be where the majority of all constituants can access their MP easily ?
