It's been a morning all about mum today, with two Mothers' Day events held in Tauranga.

Mothers turned the shoreline red for the Jennian Homes Mothers' Day Fun Run and Walk from Kulim Park this morning.

The fun run and walk raises funds for the Heart Foundation to support its Go Red for Women campaign, which aims to raise awareness of women and heart disease.

Midland heart health advocacy manager Kat MacMillan believes about 200 people pre-registered for today's 5km fun run or walk, with about 100 registering on the day.

'We're thrilled with how many people have turned up. Everyone's got a big smile on their face.”

Kat says the Go Red for Women message is for women to remember to look after themselves and get their hearts checked.

'Women are so important in the home. They look after their husbands and children – but they must remember to look after themselves. Don't forget your heart.

'That's why it was really great to see so many mums, sons and daughters keeping fit and being active this morning.”

Heart disease is NZ's number one killer of women, says Kat, who wants to thank Jennian Homes and everyone who attended for their support for the Heart Foundation.

Meanwhile, members of Tauranga motoring club Bay Rodders tooted their horns for the community to join them on a cruise to Tirau for lunch at the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel for Mothers' Day.

Everyone has a mum, says Bay Rodders' webmaster and woman of many hats Cathi Barker. But not everyone owns a gorgeous 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Ragtop like hers.

Cathi was cruising with her mother Margie this morning, while her husband Dennis Hills was behind the wheel of a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro with his mother Marie sitting in the passenger seat.

Cathi's says neither her mum Margie, or Dennis' mum Marie are car-nutters, but they love their children nonetheless.

'They think we're mad I'm sure, but there could be worse things to spend your money on. 'We just tell them we're helping to rid the world of fossil fuels.”

Each mother was given a card to write their name on, which went into a hat and the name drawn will have their lunch shouted by the Okoroire Hotel as a gift for Mothers' Day.
