A 90-year-old woman has suffered serious shoulder and pelvic injuries following a head on collision just outside Hahei this afternoon.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was dispatched to scene of the crash which took place 1km west of Hahei at about 11.40am

The elderly woman was a passenger in the vehicle which collided head on with another car carrying foreign tourists.

All the other people involved in the crash received moderate to minor injuries and were treated at the scene by St John ambulance staff.

The seriously injured elderly woman has since been airlifted to Tauranga Hospital for medical attention.
