Police Inspector Tony Wakelin says the 74-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle, crashing into a culvert. He was trapped in the drain until freed by emergency services.

"He has Status 1 life threatening injuries and has been airlifted to hospital."

Tony says it is believed family members were following the motorcycle in a car and witnessed the crash.

Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter pilot Liam Brettkelly says it is unsure why the man crashed on a straight stretch of road but he received serious chest injuries as a result.

He was treated at the scene by St John ambulance staff before being flown to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

The Tauranga-based helicopter was used because of the distance to hospital.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is at the scene investigating.
