Gould makes long-awaited return

After more than 730 days in the sporting wilderness, former New Zealand Sevens star Lavinia Gould is back on the international scene.

The Bay of Plenty 34-year-old was today named in the New Zealand Women's Sevens for the final two legs of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series – having served a two-year doping ban.

In 2013, the player had her sporting career turned on its head after testing positive for methylhexaneamine (MHA), found in a dietary supplement she was using while competing for New Zealand at the Dubai sevens late in 2012.

The drug was deemed 'performance-enhancing” by the World Anti-Doping Agency, but was only prohibited in competition.

In January this year she was added to Horan's contracted squad for 2015, only for 'niggly injuries” to delay her return to the international arena.

'Lavinia's been waiting a while and has been unlucky with injury niggles, so we're incredibly excited for her,” says New Zealand Women's Sevens coach Sean Horan.

'We're also excited and looking forward to playing back-to-back tournaments and we want to come home with our third World Series – which is not that easy in the pressure cooker of Olympic qualification.”

The final two legs of the World Series are in London and Amsterdam, with the Kiwi women intent on retaining their undefeated record.

New Zealand has won all four of the six rounds played so far in the competition, in Dubai, Brazil, USA and Canada, and lead the points table on 80, followed by Canada on 58 and Australia on 56.

With the side's position on the World Series points stable looking dominant, Horan has made five changes – retaining a core group of players while giving others an opportunity to gain tournament air miles.

'We've brought back Jordan Webber, Shiray Tane and Kat Whata-Simpkins to give them some valuable in-tournament game time which will help build our quality depth,” adds Horan.

Gould is joined by Bay of Plenty teammate Kelly Brazier, who has been named vice-captain of the side.

In London the side faces Brazil, Spain and France. The event is on May 15-16.
