The 27-year-old driver of the Toyota suffered minor leg injuries in the crash and the 18-year-old female driver of the Holden sustained minor injuries.

The crash saw the stretch of highway closed for around three-and-a-half hours as emergency services dealt with the crash.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says Raj was a Nepalese man from Rotorua.

Police enquiries are continuing and no further information is available at this time.

Ian urges drivers to take extreme care on Western Bay of Plenty roads over the winter months and particularly during adverse weather conditions.
