AOS at Yatton Park.

He will appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow facing criminal charges, says the spokesperson.

Earlier this morning armed police cordoned off streets in Merivale as they continued to hunt for the man.

Cordons were in place at the corner of Hampton Terrace and Fraser Street and police have been spotted at Yatton Park.

Northern Police Communicatons Inspector Tony Wakelin says this afternoon's cordons are linked with the domestic violence incident at Wairoa Pa Road this morning.

He says the Armed Offenders Squad has been deployed but there has been no mention of a firearm.

"It seems to be under control. The cordons are in place because there are armed offenders are in the area."

Police remain confident they are closing in on a man involved in a family violence incident at Wairoa Pa Road this morning.

There are armed police cordons in place at Wairoa Pa Road and Te Puna Road as police hunt a man armed with a weapon.

Armed police are stopping traffic in Te Puna this morning as they hunt a man.

Northern Police Communications Inspector Willie Taylor says the man is not armed with a firearm.

'We received a call at about 7.45am about a family violence incident at Wairoa Pa Road and State Highway 2,” says Willie.

'Indications are that a man is armed with a weapon, but not a firearm.

'We are taking due precautions and preparing for whatever behaviour the man might present.”

Willie says police believe they have the alleged offender contained in the general area and are confident he is not at the Wairoa Pa Road address.

'The Armed Offenders Squad should be there, if they aren't already,” says Willie.

The area where the alleged offender is believed to be contained is a large rural area with tracks backing onto land, explains Willie.

'If he is not at an address then it's likely he at large somewhere else. We are stopping and searching vehicles in the area and the cordons in place restrict a lot of traffic movement.

'We are getting information from people that we have stopped.”

Willie says if people do have information relevant to the operation or see anyone acting suspiciously in the Te Puna/Wairoa area, they are asked to call 111.
